You've finished washing and the bike's dripping. When can you put the battery back in and plug it in?
When it's completely dry. Nobody gives a number of hours, and that's worth knowing before you go looking for one.
Why makers insist
Velotric says drying completely is imperative, because excess water can damage the bike's electrical components.1 Canyon says to make sure the bike is completely dry before replacing the battery.2
Step by step
Get the bulk off. One guide says to bounce the bike gently on its tires to shake off excess water.3
Wipe it down. Use a dry cloth. If water is left over, a dry cloth will absorb it.2 Pay extra attention to the headset bearing and seat post, since they probably got wet.1
Check the electrical areas. Before you refit the battery, ensure all electrical connections and compartments are completely dry.3
Let it air-dry. The same guide says to air-dry the bike in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.3 Velotric's advice on where to leave it is to avoid a contained space where it can't dry.1
Don't count on the sun alone. One guide says to dry by hand with microfiber and not to rely on sun-drying.4 It also says drying helps protect seals and connectors.4 Another says to keep the bike out of direct sunlight while it dries.3
Symptom: you're not sure it's dry enough
No maker saved here sets a waiting time. So what do you do?
- Look at the battery seat, the contacts and the charging port. Visible water is a sign it isn't ready (a general check, not from a maker's guide).
- Wipe again with a dry cloth.2
- Wait longer. Reinstall the battery and display only when everything is completely dry.4
- Check your manual. It's the only source that can give a wait for your bike.
If you're unsure, check your manual or ask your maker or a bike shop. They can tell you what applies to your model, which a general guide can't. The waiting time is theirs to give, not ours.
Before you plug in
Charging steps and fire safety must come from your own maker's manual or your local fire service. The maker blogs saved here aren't the place to take charging rules from.
Before you ride
If the bike behaves strangely after drying, check your manual or ask your maker or a bike shop. Please don't guess about it, and don't open the battery or motor yourself.
Chain care comes last. A maker's guide says to wipe the chain with a dry rag before lubing it.3 For which cleaners makers prefer, read the cleaner advice.
